A City Named for Its Trees
Hickory Hills incorporated in September 1951 with about 600 residents, covering the blocks between 91st and 95th Streets and 80th and 88th Avenues. The Hickory Hills Country Club, with its 1917 golf course, is even older than the city. The name says what the land looked like: rolling ground with hickory and oak, at the edge of what's now the Palos forest preserve country.
Many Hickory Hills homes, built from the 1950s onward, now sit under trees that are fifty, sixty or more years old. Some are native oaks and hickories that were here first. Lighting those trees well takes a little more knowledge than wrapping a young subdivision maple.
Tree and Shrub Lighting in Hickory Hills, by Tree
Shagbark hickory: wrap over the plates
The shagbark hickory gets its name from bark that peels away in long, loose plates. Those plates catch strands, chafe wire and trap moisture. Wind works a strand underneath them and pulls it out of line. So we wrap over the plates, not under them, at a slightly wider spacing of about four inches, and secure each pass so it can't slip into the gaps. The result is an even spiral that holds all season and comes off cleanly.
Oaks: tight spacing for furrowed bark
Oak bark is deeply furrowed, so at a loose spacing every other pass disappears into a groove. We tighten to about three inches between passes to keep the trunk looking solid from the street, then follow two to four primary limbs outward.
Maples and younger trees: carry it high
Smoother-barked maples show every bulb, and younger trees can often be wrapped almost completely. Either way, we carry the light at least a third of the way into the visible height so the tree looks intentional rather than lit to head height.
Evergreens: from the inside
Spruce, pine and arborvitae get the strand worked into their branches, so they glow from within and hold up in wind.
Shrubs: hand-wrapped
Foundation yews, junipers and boxwood are hand-wrapped so each glows from inside. We never use nets, which flatten shapes into a visible grid.
Bulbs and Colour
Minis on trees and shrubs, because they sit flat to bark and branches. C9s go on the roofline. Our default is warm white, around 2700K, which looks rich against dark bark and evergreen needles and matches the roofline so the whole property reads as one design. Multicolour is available.
Why Hire a Professional for Tree Lighting?
Big old trees mean ladders on uneven, root-laced ground under heavy limbs, in November cold. Shagbark bark makes DIY wraps sag and snag. And strands tied tight, or left on into spring, can harm trees. We wrap firmly without cutting ties or staples, and remove everything in late January or February, weather permitting, before the growing season.

What Drives the Price
Average-cost websites quote a single figure for "holiday lights," but tree work doesn't fit one number. We price each tree separately by height, how far up we wrap, spacing, the number of limbs followed and the distance to power, plus the length of shrub beds. Your online quote lists every item.
What to Look For in a Tree Lighting Company
Ask how they wrap a mature tree: how high, how many limbs, what spacing, and how they handle rough bark. Ask whether they own and store the lights, whether they're insured, how repairs work and until when, and whether the quote needs an appointment. We answer all of it in writing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you put Christmas lights on a shagbark hickory?
Yes. We wrap over the loose bark plates rather than under them, at about four-inch spacing, and secure each pass so it can't slip into the gaps. That keeps the spiral even and protects both the strand and the tree.
How high up the tree do you wrap?
At least a third of the visible height on mature trees, following a few primary limbs outward, and often more on younger trees. That keeps the lit portion in proportion so it doesn't look like a lit stump.
Do I need to buy or store the lights?
No. Twinkle Bros supplies all lights, cords and timers, owns them, and stores them at our facility after takedown.
Are repairs included?
Yes. If one of our sections fails from product failure or weather between installation and December 31, we repair it at no charge.
When should I book tree and shrub lighting in Hickory Hills?
In October or early November. Most installs run mid-October to mid-November, and mature-tree work takes more crew time, so earlier dates fill first.
